Lavra Lecture Series with Dr. Christina Firpo

Saturday, March 3 "Negotiated Affections: Clandestine Prostitution in Inner-War Vietnam" Cal Poly History Professor Christina Firpo brings listeners back to the dark and sultry world of black-market prostitution in northern Vietnam, 1920-1945.  She will talk about the crime world: how it benefited some women and how it left others vulnerable.  Firpo is the author of numerous articles and her first book in 2016, The Uprooted: Race, Children and Imperialism in French Indochina, 1890-1980.  This important case study on women in society will undoubtedly make us think deeper about the issues surrounding sex and gender in America, as well.
