Concert: Anna May

Originally from Connecticut, before becoming a western transplant, Anna May is a singular artist whose songs bear a placelessness that lends to their timeless nature. Anna is a critically acclaimed songwriter & vocalist who strives to bring jazz elements into the format of folk. The deep exploration of heartbreak and trauma has been an ongoing quest throughout Anna's work. Her lyrics have been heavily textured by a lonesome whimsicality that finds itself most at home in the vastness of the American West. Anna's music honors the nomadic spirit with memory, meditation & fresh interpretations of folk music and jazz influence. She honors a hope to enhance connection, humility, healing, and joy among people in the process of parting with typical genre rules.

Last Lavra Lecture: Steve Lloyd-Moffett on What Living in Community has taught me

Stephen Lloyd-Moffett, Saturday May 18th 6pm

After spending a year living in monasteries in his 20s and an academic career studying religious communities, Steve co-founded the Lavra in 2012 to create a modern version of living in community and a gathering space.  The last 11 years has been a wonderful, and at times painful, adventure, with thousands of visitors and hundreds of events.  In this final Lavra Lecture, Steve will reflect upon this journey and what it means for broader understandings of creating lives worth living.

After eight years and over 50 speakers, the Lavra Lecture Series in its current form comes to an end on Saturday, May 18th at 6PM.  Prior to the talk, there will be drinks and appetizers as part of an open house of the new Vineyard House at the Lavra that has been four-years in the making. Come celebrate and reflect, as the Lavra transitions to a new phase!

Open-air Theater: Odysseus Dies at the End

Exit Pursued by a Bear presents a new original play by Weston Scott adapted from a lost play by Sophocles. This unique new work balances precariously on the line between tragedy and comedy, employing a contemporary voice and sentiment to the telling of an ancient story that examines the ways that we assert ourselves as individuals as well as members of a community. Odysseus has traveled over the waters, flirted with disaster, and bested every foe. And his friends and family hate him for it. As Odysseus tries to escape a fateful prophecy, he’ll face a murderous son, a devoted wife, a scorned sea-witch, a boy with a cow, the cow itself, and a Greek chorus all trying to make sense of their lives when everything has always revolved around Odysseus. Adapted from the fragments of a lost Sophocles play, “Odysseus Dies at the End” examines the life a legend from the perspective of the people clinging to his coattails. Spoiler alert: he dies at the end.

Exit Pursued by a Bear is a non-profit theatre group dedicated to bringing unique and accessible theatre to the Central Coast. Their focus is creating innovative retellings of classic stories and texts with fresh and relevant perspectives. They often perform in found spaces with minimal resources, but always seek to provide engaging and challenging theatrical experiences.

Lavra Lecture on the Environment

Stephen Robert Miller, Friday February 2nd 6PM

Stephen Robert Miller  is a journalist who has written for a number of reputable publications and taught at University of Colorado.  His book Over the Seawall attempts to chart human's attempts to combat climate change, which have led to many unintended consequences. The title comes from Japan's attempt to thwart future climate-change tsunamis with a seawall that was identical to the one that was just destroyed.  In his journey to understand the human response, he discovered broader lessons about life, which he will share with us.
Space is limited.  The event is free but as a symposium we encourage you to bring something to drink to share with new and old friends.

Author's Inside Fundraiser

Many of you attended a Lavra Lecture last spring in which we were fortunate to hear from Emmanual & Laura Gaisie about their endeavors to bring the stories within our incarcerated and formerly incarcerated population to life.  Many of you asked how we can best support such inspirational work so we have created a fundraising dinner to support their nonprofit, Authors Inside.

For those who missed the presentation, Authors Inside is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization empowering incarcerated and formerly incarcerated authors to make sustainable change through narrative writing, with the purpose of reducing and preventing juvenile crime, promoting and maintaining safe communities, and improving the welfare of youth and families.  They have published a dozen books written by incarcerated formerly-incarcerated authors who have stories to share with the world and they have many more “on the books” that just await funding.

Here are the details:

When: Saturday September 30th from 5-9pm, including appetizers and drinks, dinner, music, and a presentation.

Where: Lavra Sunset Patio and Plaza

Who: Anyone wanting to support this nonprofit, limited to 50 attendees.

A Staged reading of Eleemosynary, by Lee Blessing

This play probes into the delicate relationship of three singular women: the grandmother, Dorothea, who has sought to assert her independence through strong-willed eccentricity; her brilliant daughter, Artie (Artemis), who has fled the stifling domination of her mother; and Artie's daughter, Echo, a child of exceptional intellect-and sensitivity-whom Artie has abandoned to an upbringing by Dorothea.

Lavra Lecture on the New Map of Life

The New Map of Life

Marie Conley-Smith, Researcher at the Stanford Longevity Center.

Over the course of the 20th century, the average human life span in the US nearly doubled; it’s not unreasonable to expect that most babies born today will live to be 100. Yet, the cultural and institutional norms that govern how we live are largely still centered around much shorter life spans. How can we learn to take advantage of our extra years individually and as a society, and ensure that everyone has access to healthy, purposeful long lives? In this talk we will explore the Stanford Center on Longevity’s New Map of Life project, which envisions a world that better supports century-long lives.

Experimental sound art performance comes to the Lavra Friday May 19th…

The Lavra will host an unforgettable evening that will change how you think about music, art, and performance.  Houston-based sound artist Rebecca Novak together with SF-based artist Ivy Woods present a duet titled “Waveform Reversal” in which they translate light waves into sound waves and vice versa through the use of a 16mm projector and cornet.  We will gather at 7:30pm for drinks and the performance will start a little after 8. The event is free and open to all Lavra friends.  We encourage people to bring a drink to share and a dessert.

Here is more about the performance: Inspired by Yvonne Rainer’s Hand Movie and Homemade, Trisha Brown’s historic projected dance performance, Woods’ hand and objects become gestural surfaces that animate and redirect the light of a 16mm projector back into the projector’s sound head, reading its flickers like a sound-generating score while dispersing the remaining light in an iridescent shadow-dance. The duo’s material vocabulary transfigures simple binary parameters: on/off, light/dark, sound/silence are expanded through a gradient spectrum of fine-grained tonal shifts, articulated mechanical noise and subtle feedback of acoustic waveforms as Novak’s malleable utterances dovetail, collide and juxtapose with Woods’ projectors-as-instruments in a ceaseless coaxing of pattern and form.
